The evil that men do.

Politics today has been called by the media and commentators, the cult of personality and to some extent, they are correct. Some of the followers of some of our leaders do indeed display cultish behaviour. I think it goes far deeper than that though. I think it taps into the true feelings of these followers and allows them to be seen and heard.

When Donald Trump announced he was going to run for the Presidency of the United States all the pundits and commentators treated him as a joke, even his opposition thought it would never happen. Don’t forget, this man was on record for many years as a Democrat, extolling the virtues of many of the party and the many good things that had happened under Democratic Presidents. This man, also when asked if he would ever run for office replied that if he ever did he would run under the Republican party, and this is the important thing to remember, he said he would do so because they will believe anything you tell them.

He knew from the get go that he could spew any amount of bullshit and they would believe it as gospel and he also knew that if he tapped into their basic fear of anything and anyone not white, he would have followers for life. So that’s exactly what he did. Through his words and actions he allowed all the hatred and racism that was being held in check by socieital standards to be let loose. He gave permission for all that bile to become considered normal behaviour.

Trump is such a narcissist that he cannot comprehend losing that is why he turned the country against itself on Jan 6th. For him to lose that election it had to be rigged because it was incomprehensible that he lost through anything he did or said. In his eyes he did nothing wrong, it had to be someone else’s fault.

The evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones. That quote from Marc Antony in Julius Caesre by William Shakespeare is apt in this situation. The harm that Trump has done to world politics, I say world politics because his influence has spread far and wide and the UK had their very own Mini Trump in Boris Johnson, a narcissist cut from the very same entitled white upbringing cloth, that Trump was born into, will be extremely hard to recover from, if at all. Common sense is now a thing of the past, science deniers are listened to more than the actual scientists and trust in the very governments that rule us is at an all time low. Even if a new government is elected, a truly good government who has only the interests of the people at heart and not just the few, I doubt anyone would believe in their intentions. There will always be a small minority that will find fault but because of people like Trump and Johnson we have allowed ourselves to be led down a path that only leads to despair and ruin, unless you are a multi millionaire. Ordinary people and the most vulnerable in society have nothing to hope for except more of the same and we have to accept some of the blame because we elected them.

People often say things like in the good old days, and when I was growing up we had it so much better. Did we though, or has this been coming all the time, creeping up on us slowly so we didn’t see it coming before it was too late. Times were much simpler back then, is something else I often hear. Truth be told they were because we were ignorant to much of what was happening and we simply accepted it as the norm. Awareness brings with it new problems but there will always be those few who don’t accept it because they are fixed in their own belief system even when the truth is staring them in the face.

Trump has been found out to be the con man he always was and still there are some that he did nothing wrong. This isn’t cultish behaviour it reaches down into their own core belief system. What they mean is he did nothing wrong because I can see nothing wrong in what he did. When you have a follower of his saying things like “He could stand on the steps of the White House and commit murder and I’d still follow him,” that’s not belonging to a cult, that is sociopathic behaviour. You can call it a cult if you want, I call it evil.
